New Search Engine Concepts

1 comments - Post a comment

Thanks to tamalanwar and lilyarbee for taking my invitation to explore new search engine Scour, that pays you to search, comment and vote on search results. In previous post about Scour I didn't mentioned that you need to accumulate 6500 points to receive $25. Right now, only two users have enough, which shows how young is this search engine.

New search engine concepts are born very fast these days. It seems like Google is taking quite hard punches, but we can't see any damage. Is Google already too big to have a competitor in web searching?

I wanted to mention just two search engines which you might missed. First one is SearchMe, very fun to use, just try it. Second one from some unexplained reason has become most popular story in last few days both on web and major standard media. I'm talking about Cuil. Designed by ex Google engineers, Cuil claims to be "the world's biggest search engine", yes, bigger than Google. Just a quick test, Cuil gives 92 results when search for Webomatik and Google 10.400 - BIG difference.

Variety in search engines is welcomed. Some may fear that Google will become on web the same as Microsoft was (is) in Operating Systems, but I don't think that will ever be the case because changing OS is much harder than changing favorite search engine or web email client, which is just a click away. On the other hand, someone is maybe producing fear-of-google, who knows why?

RSS Feed Compare Web Service

No Comment - Post a comment

RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) Feed is important part of any blog because it provides easy access to new content via e-mail or special online and offline applications, RSS readers. Number of RSS subscribers usually represents amount of regular blog readers, which to some point may be a sign of blog’s popularity. We should not forget that some online services use this number when they want to find out how much particular blog is worth. Bloggers are also aware of this and they will never stop finding new ways to increase number of subscribers.

Don’t forget, this magic number is also a big ego buster for some. I believe more for male bloggers than for females, but I might be wrong?

rss feed compare free web service
Many people understand this and some have tried (and succeeded) to take advantage of the fact. So, they built FeedCompare, free web service which allows you to compare yours with others, subscribers number that is. I like this tool and I use it from time to time because it gives me easy way to see how people react on some posts. Some post title keywords were able to increase number of RSS subscribers more than others and this information can be useful. You have a choice between 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months time interval view and you can link to your result.

Final Contest – free ad spots and EC credits

9 comments - Post a comment

After two contests, it’s time to run Third Webomatik Contest. This one will be slightly different. While only reward you could get in first and second contest were Entrecard credits, Contest number 3 gives you a chance to win free text links on blog home page and some credits. Since Webomatik is non-profit blog we don’t have cash prizes.

This will be ongoing Contest, which means every month new winners. Starting from August, one winner will get 6 months free text link spot on home page and another winner will get 50% of all Entrecard credits on Webomatik EC account, but 1.000 minimum!

To enter this Contest in any time you should subscribe to this blog’s RSS via e-mail and leave comment to notify me about it. You don’t have to comment every month, once is enough and your participation will be OK for coming months. No adult, gamble or similar links, please. Another thing, since Webomatik really hates spam, we will not send you any additional e-mail if you become winner, but we will post about winners, so try to participate will e-mail address you actually use.

Since this is going to be permanent project, there is no need for Fourth or Fifth Contest and that’s why this one is also called Final Contest. Some rules may change in future and new prizes may be added!

Conclusion:

What to do:
Subscribe to RSS via valid e-mail address and leave comment about it.

Monthly Prizes:
1. Six months free text link spot on home page
2. Minimum 1.000 Entrecard credits

Plurk When You Can't Twit

No Comment - Post a comment

What's the point of cool Twitter name when service is down few times a day! To many connections for such popular service is not acceptable. But, reality is different and when you can't twit, you can Plurk.

Plurk is a little bit different. Plurk has Karma. Plurk members have Karma, right on the scale from zero to 100. You can get Karma if you update your profile, if you plurk quality plurks every day, if you response on other plurks or if you invite more friends, so you can plurk together. You can also loose Karma, which is bad. If you have low Karma you will, beside returning to Earth in your next life as lower form of life, you will not get access to exclusive emoticons! Damn!

Plurk has a timeline, Twitter doesn't. Plurk has also a mobile page. Which one is better? It depends what criteria are you looking at. For now, Plurk is more time online, but Twitter has more members.

Tips on EC Digg User Group

6 comments - Post a comment

Just a week ago, Graham, founder of EntreCard has started something that very fast got out of control. His idea was to create user group on Digg who's members are EntreCard users. Idea spread like a virus and just few days later group got over 300 members.

What is remarkable is fact that almost everyone is friend with everyone else. In theory, if all members are active every submitted story will hit home page of Digg 100%, and we all know what that means. This is very powerful, but it's just a theory. Not everyone is active, not everyone diggs and we are not sure how Digg will react, because some may think this is a little bit of gaming a system. Take in account that not every submitted article is quality one.

You can join this group by adding all members as friends and you can start by adding me: webomatik and than adding all my friends. You will get response fast. Some new problems occurred. Graham reacted with Digg Pro-torial, blog post on how to customize your performance. First day I got over 100 emails from Digg, because I didn't change default setting which sends me email for every shout. Make sure to uncheck this option.

Don't shout to many times and don't shout same story to entire group, it's really annoying. Once or twice a day is enough. Actually, there is a limit to 100 members per shouts. Here is one tip. When you digg someone's story, you can shout that member with your link. I got great response doing like this. People are happy when they see I dugg their story and they are willing to digg mine. One of the stories I submitted "10 Proven Ways to Kill Your Blog" got 60+ diggs and 12 comments in 24 hours which is for me new record.

EC user group on Digg is awesome way to promote your content and to find interesting new stuff, but use it wisely and don't spam others.
